hello, we have a very old Magnolia Stellata which has been brilliant over the years but noticed that it has now got a kind of black moss over all the branches and the leaves are turning brown - if we cut back the diseased bits can we wash it with say a dilute of Jays Fluid or something like this.

Are the leaves going brown all over the plant or just on one or two branches?

Do you feel any stickiness on the leaves as if they are covered with honey?

If deemed necessary to cut back now is the best time for a Magnolia. They don't like it much so cut minimum necessary.
