Apricots

Would an apricot tree survive and produce fruit as far north as Durham?

It will probably survive and may flower. However in  Nottingham, I have had one good crop in 20 years. Most years a few set and the squirrels steal them while green, just to eat the kernels. I've cut it down. Apples are a safer bet that far north.

Here in the Fens, I have the Apricot in the lean-to g/h. As far as I understand, apricots flower quite early and there is a danger that frost will kill the blossom. Hence a g/h with a frost buster. This also means pollinating with a small soft brush; this year I had about 40 apricotsimageimage

  • Thank you both, think I will put apricots on hold!!! x
