Can anyone tell me the best time of year to prune back an black lace elder to encourage healthy growth for next year. I have recently bought a place with one in my garden which is in need of some loving care and I'm not sure how to look after it.
All advice appreciated
Hi Mark, you can prune it back hard in Spring, as you would a Buddleia or give it a less drastic overall light prune. Hard pruning will give you the best leaf colour.
Thanks for the reply. How close to the ground would you say a hard prune would be? I'm a complete novice gardener I'm afraid , never owned a garden and plants before.
I prune elders and buddlias down to about my knee height - it's good to cut them back by half before the worst of the winter winds can rock them about and loosen their roots as water will get in and freeze. Then in early March just tidy them up by cutting back to good buds at my knee height.
