cast iron
I recently had my toilet replaced . The original cast iron cistern went out for the scrap metal man but after a fortnight still haven't called. I keep looking at this cistern and reckon if the scrappers aren't coming I'm going to recycle it myself into a plant container. Has anyone any ideas as to how i can weather it?

If it's painted, then you need to remove that, assuming you want to make it look totally rusted. Nitromors will do that with a large dose of elbow grease, but it will take a while afterwards for rust to take hold. You can speed up the rusting process by painting it with s salt solution. Less hard work would be to have it sand or bead blasted (contact a few automotive restorers for that type work) but it will cost a bit.
If it's a bit of a faff why not try a hammered metal paint to give it a makeover
If its just emulsion, drag it round to where you want it, then attack it with a wire brush enough to score it down to the bare metal. Then the weather will have a go at it for you. Emulsion will peel off once it gets damp enough. The cast iron itself will develop a layer of thin rust once its been exposed a year or so.
