Excuse my ignorance, but is it common to see the purple-leaved version of this acer flowering in this country? Mine is covered in buds and I am flabbergasted! Now I'll get 50 posts telling me it's common as muck

No its not unusual. You will also get seeds that look (similar to) and germinate like sycamore. They get everywhere.
