Thanks to everyone who gave me advice about overwintering osteospermums last year. They're HUGE. Deadheading is a major operation at the moment. Only one casualty recovering nicely in sick bay.
Just stuck some broken bits in compost and they have grown as well. No idea about colour though. Always think I'll remember what I planted but life is full of surprises!
I sowed some from seed in Spring and they are fabulous. I think it is called purple eye. - my labelling system went awry this year. White petals with guess what?? yes, a purple eye in the middle. Highly recommended in containers, borders etc. Do I leave them where they are over winter or put them in pots in the cold frame? Anyone know?
Hi B3. Can you relate what the advice about overwintering them was? I would love to know what to do with mine. I have a couple which return well every year but others are much diminished so any tips would be gratefully received. Many thanks.
I had been growing them in pots. I put them in porch. South facing not heated. Watered them rarely but enough to keep them ticking over. Cut them right back before I put them out again. I wonder if I could've cut them before putting them in porch.
Top dressed and fed unless they were repottable.
Thatbeing said, I once had one planted in the ground that grew rampantly along a border for a few years. it only died after a severe winter but there were gas and water pipes running underneath so that might have kept the temperature up a bit.
Some Osteospermums are sold as bedding plants and are a bit tender - they are from South Africa. Others are garden perennials and seem to survive all but the harshest winters. I've got one (the ordinary purple kind) that has lived with me since 1980!
