Over wintering a Water Lily
I have a small water lily in a tub that I think I need to move so that the water doesn't freeze. Do water lilies have to be kept submerged or can they just be kept in a tray of water so that they don't dry out? All my other water lilies are just left in the pond but that is a far greater volume of water so will not be as cold.

Why not put it in the pond, just over the winter?
It had to be removed from the pond because the Carp and Koi were shredding it and pulling it out of it's pot. I trying to grow it so that it can stand up for itself. I personally would get rid of the fish but they belong to OH and he assures me are worth mega bucks.
Ah, yes. Koi carp are very expensive, I believe. Ridiculously so, in my opinion.
Can you put it in a cage in the pond so they can't get at it?
Thanks for your help, bucket in unheated greenhouse it is.
Be sure to fill the bucket from the pond.
On a slight tangent - agree with philippa's advice by the way- it's a bit of a myth about koi being valuable. They might be expensive to buy, but their value is lower than assumed afterwards. Didn't stop thieves nicking ours at the last house, dropping the biggest one (a whopper) en route, which the foxes then had a go at
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
