Problem with Bergenia

Please could someone advise me as to why my Bergenias which normally have flowered on a stem, this year the flower buds are flowering in the base without a stem.  Unless you stand over them you don't see the flowers, which admittedly are crunched up.   I can't find a reason why, anyone know?
