Our soil is mainly fairly acidic (lots of yew trees) but I want to make one bed suitable for delphiniums etc.  I am familiar with the 'mix up in a little bottle' sort of tester, but I keep seeing ones which look like meat thermometers with a guage on.  Do these actually work, does anyone know?  (They look not dissimilar to the novelty golf ball finders that the dorset man sold to the government as bomb detectors, so I'm a bit suspicious - also my chemistry is not up to much, so I can't imagine how they'd work).

Sorry, that was supposed to be a thread in tools and equipment, but I forgot to change the subject box and I don't know how to edit it now.
