Over the last few weeks these fungi have popped up in the border. They are truly disgusting with a vile smell which comes to your attention first. Not only do they have a slimy cap the base consists of a jelly filled ball. I want to try and prevent these from reappearing any ideas?

they're part of that fugal 'blooming' we get every autumn Mr R. I don't think there's anything you can do to alter that. I wouldn't want to. Amazing things.

I've never minded them, but if you do the best thing to do is to remove them and any of the immature white 'eggs' - using rubber gloves pop them in a plastic bag, tie it off and put in the bin.  I'd then hoe the area well and try to get the air to the area so that it dries out.

There's nothing you can treat the area with that won't damage the soil and your other plants, but it won't be long before the colder weather puts an end to autumn fungi for another year.

You haven't smelt them. This is the first year that they have appeared and we've been here over 20 years.

Might never see them again. We've had a number of 'one hit wonders' over the years.

Dovefromabove, thanks I've done that as far as I can, I was wondering whether the inclusion of some rotten wood debris had encouraged them.

It's the all pervasive rotten flesh smell that gets to me.

It may well have done - perhaps if you can rake it out you'll avoid the fungi in the future - I'm afraid I love the look of them - love to draw them - perhaps my sense of smell is different
