Forget about grass -go for the long term solution and lay a few paving slabs/stepping stones

Hilary 14/08/12 Can anyone tell me how to keep my lawn looking good when it is gradually being taken over by red ants that form bare soil patches all over it. I've tried using standard ant killer but it doesn't work. I'd like to kill off the ants as well as revive the grass.
There has been a lot of ant discussions lately-put ants into the searchbox-at the top of the page -you are likely to find the answer
Sandie - you'll need to rake the lawn thoroughly to remove the cement and stones - it may take several sessions. Then spike or hollow-tine the lawn to aerate it.
Now the frosts have started it's too late to apply autumn lawn feed, but give it a regular dressing of spring/summer lawn feed next year, and regular mowing ( at least weekly and not too short). And as we're into November I'd leave any reseeding necessary until the spring, but you may not need to do any - lawns are remarkably resilient with the right sort of tlc. Good luck.
