We are going to the Taunton Flower show tomorrow. I'd love to know if anyone has been before and what it's like, or have you been today - perhaps you could let me know what to expect and did you see Toby Buckland? Weather forecast isn't great but I'm excited anyway!

Winniecat.............hope you have a good day at Taunton

I've been a couple of times but not since 2001.  At that time, it was excellent as were the specialist Plant Fairs at Taunton too.  I think Taunton has a pretty good name in show circles so hopefully it will still be a worthwhile experience.

Have no idea who Toby Buckland is/was so can't help on that.

What! You don't know who Toby is, don't you read any gardening magazines or seen any garden programs with him in?

Fleurisa.............I stopped watching many of the gardening programmes when they began to go downhill..........ditto with the magazines.  I can't honestly say that it has had a detrimental effect on my life so far

Toby Buckland presented GW for a couple of disastrous years - no respect for the plants, the tools, the audience and some really bad advice and stupid projects.   The Beeb dumped him somewhat unceremoniously which wasn't very professional but he definitely had to go.

Toby wasn't the problem, it was the people who told him what to present and how. He was only the puppet

A puppet with integrity woud have resisted the urge to dumb it down and do shoddy work.

I remember sayng at the time that the whole production team needed to be changed and/or made to up their game and standards and ambitions for GW.

I agree about Toby Buckland - a nice chap who couldn't/wouldn't stand up to the production team of GW.

The Taunton Flower Show is really rather good.  I've been many times (but can't manage it this year, unfortunately) and found it friendly and informative on all the stands.  It's a bit like a local village flower and produce show on a large scale, with commercial plant and equipment stands, as well as some gardens to see.  They also have demonstrations and a show arena, so it's all rather jolly.

I hope you have a great time Winniecat.  They were saying on Points West TV that it is bigger and better than ever this year, so I hope it lives up to the hype.

SViolet............good to hear that Taunton is still a good experience.  Unfortunately I don't think the forecast is too good for tomorrow.  Then again, I for one am grateful for the rain.....despite the flooding over winter, it has been bone dry here for too long.

Weather here is predicted to be showery, gradually drying up, so it's in the lap of the gods as to what it's like at the show tomorrow!

It has been raining all afternoon - a steady, gentle rain that doesn't batter the plants down, but actually gets right into the soil, and, boy, do we need it!  (On the minus side, I've already been out there hunting for the slimies and crunchies that have emerged into the damp).

So how was it for you, Winniecat?  I've been in Wellington today - a downpour at lunchtime, but lots of warm sunshine for the rest of the day.  Was Taunton as lucky?  And did you enjoy the flower show?

Thanks for asking Violet, we had a lovely day. Weather was sunny and hot, just one shower at lunchtime.
The show was great - plenty of entertainment, show gardens and lots of trade stands selling everything from wellies to wheelbarrows and some great plants for sale. I was quite restrained due to the walk and bus ride to follow but still bought a fabulous canna, miscanthus, astrantia and restio!
The stars of the show were agapanthus which were selling like hot cakes. Can't wait to go again next year.
