OK, listen everyone, I've sent three emails today to local transport companies and I am feeling VERY HOPEFUL..... so I want everyone to cross fingers, toes and eyes for the next few days that we get at least one helpful response!
HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!
POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOR SOUTH-EAST MOB!
Chicky, Break23, Ryan.... I think I have an offer to transport plants from Guildford / Camberley area to Somerset. Do you think you could get your plants to Chicky at Guildford, and Chicky could you be a staging post and then link up with the chap who is travelling Guildford to Somerset?
Happy to be staging post here - will exchange details privately with those that need them.
Okee dokee - that means I think we have sorted out the south east run, and also at least partly sorted out Nut's plants. Now, just need a solution for GJ's plants heading down the M6....
Its all coming together Rosie - well done to you
How many plants do you think I'll be shifting this time round Rosie?
Probably not all, Nut - I think one small car boot-ful - but it's a start! And these are only volunteers....keep fingers crossed for help from transport companies....
Fingers well crossed Rosie
..may I just say what a marvellous job you people are doing here, even though I am not a part of it,... you deserve at least some more general recognition of your combined efforts.... not least artjak for starting it off....where there's a will, there's a way, and greatly epitomised here I think....
...very best wishes to all those involved...
When I go down mid-May, I'm sure I could fit some of Nut's plants if they were transferred to plastic bags just before traveling
That's great, AJ - so let's see how many we can get shifted on 4th May with the offer from the Somersetter, and then you could perhaps bring as many of the remainder as you can handle?
I could do that artjak, bag them up but send the pots to be with them at the other end. I'll see what's left after May 4th.
Would you be coming down the A47 on your trip, if not I could bring them to you in advance
I haven't ruled out talking to my family next weekend when they are all together for my brother's 70th so will see if I can twist some arms!
nut, I will let google work out the route, once I know exactly where I am going and will let you know; will give you plenty of notice
that's fine artjak
A rainy morning bump; my water butts were nearly empty, so rain is good. I probably won't think the same when I return sodden from taking small mutt out
STOP PRESS! VERY EXCITED!! OK, I'll stop shouting now. But we've just had an offer from a Somerset haulage company with national networks that could possible solve all our issues. They are going to try to get a network of palletline depots to receive and pass on our plants nationwide. Or possibly arrange to have their trucks meet us to pick up plants from us at motorway services.
Obviously we'd now need to get our gardening heads together to think about how well our baby plants will travel - these won't be vehicles specially adapted for plants, so at the very least we'd need to give them a good watering, maybe prune back any trailing bits, tuck them up nicely....etc etc. But this sounds really, really hopeful!
Gardenjeannie, your plants might be on their way soon!
Rosie, you are WONDERFUL
I would recommend getting cardboard boxes from supermarkets, like wine boxes so the the lids can be taped down. If the plants are in the dark, they won't need so much water; just need to be damp I would think. I would also pack a little scrunched up newspaper around the pots if they are not a tight fit to stop them falling over, plants are sent through the post all the time and usually survive
I will still go down in mid-May as would like to meet some of the people running the plant creche and stay with my old friend. My latest count is about 260 pots, some with more than one plant in.
Again, Rosie; thank you so very, very much.
