gardens

Hi, I know that sometime each year people open their gardens to the public, private gardens not normally available, can anyone tell me when  this happens and perhaps reccomend some gardens to visit.  I have a french friend who is a mad keen gardener, who thinks English gardens  are wonderful and wants to visit some while on holiday this year.  Failing that which gardens which are open all year would you reccomend as being typically English?  He really is very knowlegdable and a great admirer of English style gardens.

Hi, The yellow book lists all the gardens open to the public. It is available from NGS Gardens open for charity their website is http://www.ngs.org.uk/ . Hope this of help.

I would recommend Cothay Manor Garden, Hidcote and Kiftsgate nearby, Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes(Grade 1listed), Bristol Botanic Garden, and Barrington Court.

Yesterday we used our two for one voucher from Aprils Gardeners World Magazine to visit Muncater Castles garden, we have visited before but not at this time of year it is stunning. i took lots of pictures but unfortunatly they are to big to download to this post so i will try and add them later

The 2 for 1 booklet is coming out with May's Gardeners' World Magazine. You'll be able to visit gardens local to you with your friend and only pay for one of you. I'm not sure whether they're on the list for the guide this year, but I heartily recommend (like Happymarion) Hidcote and Kiftsgate for englishness. You can visit them on the same day.

9th/10th June, London Gardens Weekend, hundreds of gardens to choose from. We went there a couple of years ago and did those gardens close to Victoria Station. We may have visited eight in all, which was very tiring yet exceedingly enjoyable. Our favourite was the garden in Eccleston Square.

living in the north of England London Garden week is a bit far for us to travel but we do visit lots of gardens in the north, the national garden scheme is so good, Gardeners world two for one and National trust gardens are well worth a visit some times more than one.
