Advice please for a cuttings newbie!

I have never taken cuttings before, mainly because I haven't had anything to cut from! I know there is plenty of advice around in magazines and the web, but some of it is conflicting and I know you lovely people won't mind giving me the fruit of your experience. I'm wanting to multiply my plants of Penstemon "Raven" and Dianthus "Memories". I need to know all the ins and outs - cut above or below node, size of pot, best compost, grit or no, plastic bag over top? Not asking much, am I?

Below node. 7 cm sq pot , one in each corner, or inividually in deep plug trays.
Multipurpose compost mixed with 25% extra coarse grit, perlite or vermiculite to aid drainage.
Pemstemon, plastic bag or propagator lid. dianthus shouldn't need it. Keep both in shaded position until roots form. Keep out of direct sunlight.
Adding - non-flowering shoots 3-4 inches long. Strip most of the lower leaves off.
Hi Happy go to the RHS here and see the info for all types of cuttings good luck,
