What is this for?

I found this in my garden when we moved in and have kept it but have always been puzzled by it. It has four indents but no drainage. I wondered about growing houseleeks in it. But what do you think it's intended for?

PS Each indent is about 2.5 inches square.

PPS I know it needs a wash

Thanks for trying, but that's definitely underneath - just wanted to show how it's constructed. The underside is very 'unfinished' in comparison to the top.

    It's a mystery!

There's been a lot of care and thought in the manufacture.

Could it be filled with ice and then stand 4 pots of something on it once it's turned over?

So maybe not a garden thing at all?

Seems you're all as baffled as me! I had hoped someone would just come on and say "Ah, haven't seen a terracotta thingummywidget for years, terribly useful for propagating latinus latinus, don'tcha know".

Might put blotting paper in the indents and grow some cress.

Give it a good scrub and use it as a candle holder on your garden or kitchen table.
