Today  toads, frogs and newts were all very active in my pond . I am expecting spawn over the next few days and thought it would be interesting to chart the arrival of spawn throughout the country. I'm in Essex. Anyone else got active amphibians yet?

Daughter in St austell, Cornwall has loads in her garden, she doesnt have a pond, they spawned in a trug container  of rainwater. They were mating in her outside loo, .They are always there so obviously dont need a pond, she doesnt have slugs, so they do a lot of good, she loves them. She goes out late every night to shoo them back in, they sit in the road!

Yup - South Wales, first frogspawn appeared about a week ago. Now we have mountains of the stuff!

Love the frogs, but they are a swine when it comes to mowing in late summer - I have to stop every two minutes and move one or two out of the way!

I know you have to really watch where you're standing. Thank goodness I haven't stood on one yet but I've come so close, so many times. I have to inspect the drive before driving in. They just don't move! I wouldn't mind I don't even have a pond.

Hi Maureen, preformed ponds usually don't have a good entry/exit point for frogs. You will have to make an easy entry point by adding bricks, stones etc at one end/side in order to make the entrance slope gentle. You also need to have a shallow end as frogs like shallow water to mate/spawn in. It is also essential for hedgehogs as if they fall in they will not be able to negotigate the steep slippery sides and drown. Google wildlife ponds  and take a look at the ideas/tips and the pictures. Hope this helps.

spotted tons of frogspawn down at the lake at the weekend. After the otter had all our fish in the pond by the house, I'll be bringing some spawn up ASAP.

No spawn in Perthshire, Scotland in a new wildlife pond filled end of Oct 2013 without any plants yet. Guessing by the time plants are available it will be too late - or will it? Are tadpoles likely in a pond without plants?

Three clumps of frogspawn today and the pond looks like it is boiling, there are so many bubbles! (Essex)

Pond built May 2011, one lot of frogspawn last year, so far 9 lots this year.  Am thrilled.  Spotted the first lot last Friday.  However, despite sitting out in the dark and chill and keeping a good way away and not making a noise, haven't heard any croaking!!

Seen frogs mating but no spawn yet, we're in Leicestershire.  We have a preformed pond which has got sloping sides and shallows, even a little ramp for things to get out.

I counted 60 frogs in my pond this afternoon. I couldn't believe it! The noise they were making was very impressive as they all crooned along togather.Quite a sight, I'll try to upload some pics later.
