Unknown bird

Can anyone identify this large bird which was walking around my garden making a 'guk guk' sound when I git home from work?  It was bigger than a woodpigeon and was a bit ungainly in flight when it flew over the hedge after spotting me sneaking up with the camera! image

    Wow, didn't know they were around here (3m south of Leicester, 50 yards away from the A6)  First one I've seen in the nearly 4 decades I've lived here!  Thanks folks!
