Horticultural highlights

Monet’s House & Garden

This famous garden comprises two distinct halves - The Flower Garden, which is the nearest to the house and set around the Grande Allee and its side paths, and the gorgeous water garden.

The Flower Garden in summer is full of flowering climbers, including roses that trail over iron frameworks, and leafy tunnels that provide shade and cool on hot summer days. Running parallel to the Grande Allee are beds full of perennials and annuals, punctuated by further roses.

In 1893 Monet purchased the meadowland across the railway and below the house and Flower Garden. Inspired by landscapes on Japanese prints, he diverted the River Ru into the meadow to form the Water Garden. Today, this is perhaps one of the most famous gardens in the world. At its centre, a pool reflects the water lilies, willows and celebrated Japanese bridge, which is decked in pink, lilac and white wisteria.

Bordeaux Botanical Garden

Bordeaux Botanical Gardens is just a short journey on the right bank of the Seine. We will spend a couple of hours strolling around this garden which also gives striking views of the oldest part of the city.

The garden has six different sections and a field comprising 44 plots. One part is devoted to the soils and flora typical of the Bordeaux region. The well-designed water garden features collections of water lilies and other beautiful aquatic plants. In addition, there's an arboretum with a wide variety of trees and magnificent glasshouses containing Mediterranean-type vegetation.

Botanical Gardens of Cornouaille

Also known as the Cornwall Botanical Park, this garden has proved an adventure of more than thirty years now, led by Jean-Pierre Gueguen, joined by his two sons Stephen and Xavier. It is the shaping of an arboretum (mostly planted trees and shrubs) on almost 12 acres of pine forest with an abundance of the rarest and most beautiful varieties of plants. In the spring a walk among the flowering prunus, camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias is enchanting. In summer, there are many hydrangeas and the water garden is at its best.

Feedback from previous holidays...

In August 2016 guests joined us on a special cruise of French rivers and gardens in celebration of the 25th anniversary of BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, hosted by Carol Klein, Matt Biggs and the magazine's associate editor, David Hurrion.

Here's what some of our guests thought:

"I think it was a very good cruise and the gardening group was very friendly and by wearing the BBC Gardeners World Magazine labels meant you could always chat to someone with like interests."

"The cruise was a great success - everything went smoothly. The meetings on board were interesting and entertaining and the visits to the gardens were excellent"

"This was a great holiday - food, accommodation, itinerary, organisation - as well as the gardening celebrities - all made it a holiday to remember. I will look out for others in the future."
