The classic Valentine's Day gift for a loved one is an extravagant bouquet of ruby red roses. If you're looking for something a little more understated and seasonal, this is the project for you.

A heart-shaped ivy frame will create instant impact on Valentine's Day, without breaking the bank. All you need to make your topiary frame is a metal coat hanger, a cane and some garden wire. If you don't have any ivy, you can buy it cheaply at your local garden centre or nursery.

Declare your love by creating a romantic ivy heart, with the help of our practical guide, below.

You will need

  • Ivy plant
  • Terracotta pot
  • Wire coat hanger
  • Thin garden wire
  • 25cm length of garden cane
  • Compost

Straighten out the hook of the coat hanger and stretch out the triangular shape. Create a V-shaped notch in the bottom and bend the wire into a heart shape. Attach the cane to the straightened hook using garden wire.

Plant the ivy in the terracotta pot, then push the cane into the compost and wind the ivy stems around the frame. Use short lengths of thin wire to secure the stems as necessary. Water well.

Your frame can take any shape, and you can even experiment with a three-dimensional design, using two or more coat hangers.
