Tea light displays create a cosy, festive ambience at Christmas time. You can make your own rustic tea light holders from birch logs, which you may be able to source from your own garden, or from tree surgeons.

The best size of birch log is around 10cm in diameter, which is ideal for holding a tea light. Choose different heights for your tea light holders, to emphasise their rustic, homespun feel. Alternatively, you could create lanterns with jam jars or old tin cans.

Follow our simple, three-step guide to creating your own Christmas tea light holders, below.

You will need

  • Birch logs, roughly 10cm in diameter
  • Festive ribbon
  • Drawing pins
  • Tea lights
  • Drill and 40mm wood drill bit
  • Work bench
  • Saw

Clamp a birch log firmly into a work bench and saw it into sections roughly 8-20cm long.

Using the jaws of the work bench to hold each log piece firmly, drill holes for the candles just larger than a tea light, using a 40mm wood drill bit. You could try positioning it off centre, to follow the growth rings in the wood.

Wrap the festive ribbon around the base of the tea light holders to give them a bit of extra colour and then load with tea lights.
