Gardeners' glossary A-Z

Aa

Use our easy-to-understand guide to help out with all those confusing gardening terms. From Acicular to Zebrinus, Annual to Zinc, you'll find a simple explanation below.

Aquatic

Any plant that grows either completely submerged in, or with leaves and flowers emerging from, water. It may be rooted in the soil or compost under water, or be free floating.

Areole

A small cushion-like structure found on a some cacti, which is covered in small hairs and spines.

Aristate

A stiff, bristle-like pointed end to a leaf or petal.

Aroid

Plant from the Araceae family, which includes plants such as the philodendron. Many of these produce aerial roots from their stems, which are used to absorb moisture from the air and which can help support the climbing stems.

Auricle

Term used to refer to the lobe-like outgrowths at the base of leaf blades on some grasses.

Auriculate

Refers to leaves shaped like ear lobes. See Auricle.

Awl

The space between the leaf and the main stem of a plant. A bud that's formed in this angle is referred to as an axillary bud.

Axil

The space between the leaf and the main stem of a plant. A bud formed in this angle is referred to as an axillary bud.
