Gardeners' glossary A-Z

Bb

Use our easy-to-understand guide to help out with all those confusing gardening terms. From Acicular to Zebrinus, Annual to Zinc, you'll find a simple explanation below.

Bonsai

The technique of miniaturising trees or plants by growing them in containers and pruning, training and trimming them to achieve an aesthetically desirable result.

Boron

A chemical element (atomic number 5, chemical symbol b). A trivalent metalloid element, it's an essential plant nutrient.

Botrytis

Fungus that causes disease in a wide array of herbaceous, annual and perennial plants. Characterised by a grey mold, botrytis infections are common in cool, damp spring and summer weather.

Bottom heat

The heating of soil or propagation medium for the propagation/germination of plants. It can take the form of undersoil electric cabling, a temperature-controlled mat or other bottom heating unit.

Bract

A reduced or modified leaf, from the axil of which a flower or flower stalk grows.

Brassica

A genus of plants in the mustard family, the members of which may be collectively known as mustards or cabbages. The various parts of different species of brassica have been developed for food, such as roots for swedes, stems for kohlrabi, leaves for cabbages, flowers for broccoli, and seeds for oil seed rape.

Break

The deliberate planting of trees, hedges or shrubs to provide fields or gardens with protection from strong winds.

Broadcast (sow)

The sowing of large areas. This is done either by scattering seed by hand or mechanically.

Bud

An undeveloped or embryonic shoot, normally occurring in the axil or at the stem tip, and protected by scale leaves. Once formed, may remain unexpanded for some time or shoot immediately.

Bud blast

The withering and dropping of buds from an otherwise healthy plant. Often caused by botrytis infection.
