Gardeners' glossary A-Z

Cc

Use our easy-to-understand guide to help out with all those confusing gardening terms. From Acicular to Zebrinus, Annual to Zinc, you'll find a simple explanation below.

Cactus

A member of the succulent plant family, particularly adapted to arid and extremely hot environments, and characterised by spines. Often flowers at night.

Calcareous

A term that refers to alkaline soil, which contains calcium or calcium carbonate.

Calcicole

A plant that favours chalky or calcareous soils.

Calcifuge

A plant that cannot tolerate alkaline soil. Described as ericaceous, calcifuges grown on alkaline soils will exhibit symptoms of iron deficiency.

Calcium

A chemical element (atomic number 20, chemical symbol ca). A soft, grey, alkaline earth metal, essential for living organisms in cell physiology.

Calyx

A ring or whorl of sepals, which may be coloured and petal-like or green. Helps to protect the flower in bud.

Cambium

An internal layer of cells between the inner bark and the sapwood of a tree, where growth takes place. It gives secondary xylem and phloem, thereby increasing the girth of the organ.

Campanulate

Bell shaped.

Cane

A long, supple woody stem, often used to support young or fragile plants.

Canker

A general term for disease that's characterised by patches of dead cells on the trunk or branches of a tree or woody plant. Also see Anthracnose.
