Gardeners' glossary A-Z

Ee

Espalier

A plant, usually a fruit tree, whose branches are trained horizontally and flat against a wall or other framework.

Etiolate

Refers to a 'leggy' plant with pale leaves, caused by inadequate light conditions. See Drawn.

Evergreen

A plant with leaves that remain green and alive all year round.

Exfoliate

To peel off in thin layers or shreds, as the bark of some trees.

Eye

1) The centre of a flower, where it's a different colour to the rest of the bloom.

2) An undeveloped bud, eg, of a potato.
