Gardeners' glossary A-Z

Ss

Strain

The parentage line from which a plant is descended. The selection of a cultivar or species.

Strap-shaped

Refers to leaves that are three times as long as they are wide, with roughly parallel sides.

Stratification

The practice of exposing hard seeds to cold conditions or refrigeration to break dormancy and encourage germination.

Striate

Of leaves having long lines, fine ridges or stripes.

Strigose

To have hair-like scales or bristles.

Strobilus

A cone-like structure, as produced by pines or spruce.

Style

The female part of a flower's reproductive organ that connects the ovary and the stigma. It's usually long and slender in shape. See Pistil.

Sub-alpine

A plant that's native to the mountainous area just below the alpine zone.

Sub-shrub

A term used to describe a plant that has a woody base and herbaceous shoots that die back each year.

Subulate

A leaf that has a very long tapering point. It's sometimes referred to as awl shaped.
