Tap root

The large, central root that grows downwards, and from which smaller, lateral roots grow.

Taxonomy

The practice of classifying plants and animals.

Tender

A term used to describe plants that are unable to stand frost or freezing temperatures.

Tendril

The coiled, cord-like growths (modified stems or leaves) produced by climbing plants, which enable them to attach to supports.

Tepal

A term used when sepals and petals are indistinguishable from one another, because they are similar in size, shape and colour.

Terete

Cylindrical or circular in cross section, but occasionally tapering.

Terminal

The tip or apex of a plant.

Ternate

To be grouped in threes. Having three leaflets, or a leaf that's divided into three parts.

Terrestrial

Plants that grow in the soil, land plants.

Tessellate

Used of leaves or petals having a mosaic-like patterning.
