Nesting ball for birds with wool, moss and string

How to make a nesting ball for birds

Provide nesting material for garden birds by making this nesting ball – we show you how.

Do it:

Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May

Takes just:

30 minutes

Nesting garden birds like robins, wrens and blackbirds use a variety of materials to construct their nests.

By using things like moss, pet hair and short bits of wool, you can make a nesting ball for garden birds.

Positioned near a feeding station, it'll help attract birds to your garden and they can take the materials they need from it. Simply refill as needed over the nesting period, then keep your wire framework to use again next year.

You will need

  • Garden wire
  • Cricket or tennis ball
  • Wool, cotton and string
  • Moss
  • Pet hair

Cut a 1m length of wire and shape around the ball, making sure the gaps are large enough to allow the nesting material to be pushed in, and pulled out by birds.
Fill with moss and lengths of wool, cotton and string – no longer than 7cm to prevent birds from getting tangled up. You can also buy nesting wool from the RSPB.
Make sure the nesting material is secure in the ball. Take a 20cm length of wire and fasten to the top of the ball before making a hook shape, ready to be hung outdoors.

Kate Bradbury

Kate Bradbury says:

In the winter months, keep bird feeders stocked with fat-rich suet products, peanuts, sunflower hearts and nijer seed. Leave food for ground-feeding birds like robins and blackbirds, too. Migrant birds from eastern Europe are often shyer than resident birds, and may benefit from food being left at the base of shrubs or the back of borders.
