Problem solving

Primula leaf with fungal spots

Symptoms

Spots on the leaves, fringed yellow-orange, possibly with white fungal growth beneath. Some spots might be white, others brown, surrounded by papery tissue. When the centres fall out, the leaf ends up peppered with holes.

Find it on: primulas

Time to act: summer

Primula leaf spot

Spores carried by water and wind spread this fungus, which leaves primula foliage peppered with holes. The initial signs are spots in a yellow-orange area, or in grey, papery tissue. When the centre falls out, holes appear. Look beneath the leaves and there may also be white fungal growth.

Solution

Organic

Promptly pick off and destroy affected leaves. If leaf spot is a persistent problem, try growing your primulas under glass.

Chemical

Spraying with myclobutanil or penconazole may help give some control, although they're not specifically labelled as a solution for primula leaf spot.
