How to...

layer bulbs in a pot

Bulbs in flower

You will need:

  • Deep pot
  • Compost
  • Large-flowered daffodils
  • Tulips
  • Dwarf bulbs, such as crocus or iris

Overview

If you want a spring-flowering display to go on as long as possible, plant separate layers of different varieties of bulbs in one pot. All you need to create a display which flowers in succession is a large pot and a variety of bulbs that will flower at different times.

How to do it

  1. Planting daffodil bulbsFill the base of the pot with compost and plant a layer of large-flowered daffodils on top. Cover with a little compost.

  2. Planting tulip bulbsNext plant a layer of tulips. Spread the bulbs out generously across the surface and cover with more compost.

  3. Planting crocus bulbsFinally, plant a layer of dwarf bulbs, such as crocus or iris. Cover with compost and water in.

Adam's Tip

"Daffodils benefit from early planting (in September) but tulips are best left to a November planting."
