How to make Christmas decorations

Overview

These pretty outdoor tea light holders are made from birch logs, which you can often obtain from tree surgeons. The best size to go for is around 10cm in diameter, which is ideal for holding a tea light. Choose different heights for your tea light holders, to emphasize their rustic, home-made feel.

How to do it

Sawing birch logs

1

Clamp a birch log firmly into a work bench and saw it into sections roughly 8-20cm long.

Drilling holes in birch logs

2

Using the jaws of the work bench to hold each log piece firmly, drill holes for the candles just larger than a tea light, using a 40mm wood drill bit. You could try positioning it off centre, to follow the growth rings in the wood.

Wrapping festive ribbon around the birch logs

3

Wrap the festive ribbon around the base of the tea light holders to give them a bit of extra colour and then load with tea lights.
