How to make a natural cough remedy

Overview

Many herbal remedies are easy to make at home using home-grown ingredients, providing relief for the symptoms of coughs and colds. This onion and honey solution is a simple remedy for coughs - the onion has antibacterial properties and the honey soothes sore throats.

Take one teaspoonful four to five times a day until symptoms improve. If symptoms persist after a week, consult your doctor.

How to do it

Chopping an onion

1

Peel, top and tail a large white onion, then slice it in half.

Pouring honey over the onion

2

Place half the onion in a glass bowl and pour in enough clear honey to cover it.

Covering the bowl with cling film

3

Cover the bowl with cling film and leave it for three to four hours so that the honey draws all the beneficial juices from the onion.

Pouring the remedy into a sterilised jar

4

Strain the liquid into a sterilised bottle and keep it in the fridge. Discard the onion. Use the remedy within two days.
