How to...

grow hippeastrum

Hippeastrum flower

You will need:

  • Hippeastrum bulb
  • Bulb fibre or multi-purpose compost
  • Flower pot, large enough to accommodate bulb or, ready-boxed hippeastrum kit with pot and compost included
  • Bowl to soak bulb

Overview

The huge bulbs of hippeastrum already have the flowerbud inside, so they couldn't be simpler to grow. All you need to do is pot it up, water thoroughly and stand the hippeastrum in a well-lit place to enjoy its spectacular blooms.

How to do it

  1. Hippeastrum bulb in bowl of waterSoak the hippeastrum bulb and its roots in a bowl of tepid water for a few hours before potting it up.

  2. Half filling flower pot with compostHalf fill the pot with bulb fibre or multi-purpose compost, breaking up any lumps and lightly firming it in place with your fingers.

  3. Filling around hippeastrum bulb with compostSet the bulb in place and fill between it and the sides of the pot with more compost. Water well and position the hippeastrum in a well-lit position to grow on.

Adam's Tip

Adam's Tip

"Keep your hippeastrum in a cool room with plenty of light as this will allow it to develop slowly, maintaining a strong flower shoot and leaves."
