make an ivy heart

Ivy heart

You will need:

  • Ivy plant
  • Terracotta pot
  • Wire coat hanger
  • Thin garden wire
  • 25cm length of garden cane
  • Compost

Overview

This heart-shaped frame will create instant impact for Valentine's day without breaking the bank. You can make your topiary frame with a metal coat hanger, a cane and some garden wire.

How to do it

  1. Attaching cane to wire coat hangerStraighten out the hook of the coat hanger and stretch out the triangular shape. Create a V-shaped notch in the bottom and bend the wire into a heart shape. Attach the cane to the straightened hook using garden wire.

  2. Winding ivy around wire framePlant the ivy in the terracotta pot, then push the cane into the compost and wind the ivy stems around the frame. Use short lengths of thin wire to secure the stems as necessary. Water well.

Adam's Tips

Adam's Tip

"Choose small-leaved ivy for the best effect."

"Your frame can take any shape, and you can even experiment with a three-dimensional design, using two or more coat hangers."
