grow salad leaves from seed

Overview

Salad leaves can be grown on a cut-and-come-again basis; harvesting the larger leaves by cutting them, allowing the smaller leaves to grow for a second crop. If you make successional sowings of seeds every three weeks, you will have a constant supply of salad throughout the year. You can sow seeds indoors from March, but from late-May you should be able to sow seeds directly into pots outside.

How to do it

  1. Filling pot with compostFill a large plant pot with peat-free multi-purpose compost and water well.

  2. Sprinkling salad seeds onto compost Once the water has drained, sprinkle the seeds over the soil's surface and cover them with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Leave the pot on a bright window sill or in a greenhouse.

  3. Joe Swift harvesting salad leavesAfter about three weeks, the leaves should be large enough to harvest. Cut them off carefully; the smaller leaves should grow and produce a second crop. Sow more seeds at regular intervals for a continuous supply.

I grew the salad leaves last year and had a supply all through the summer, one of the nicest ways to get one over on the super markets, saved a little fortune over the summer, and always fresh.

Hello, I have looked at the guides on greenhouse tomatoes and they are very useful. I have grown three sorts of tomatoes Moneymaker (normal size), Legend (beefsteak) and cherry tomato too. Are they all treated the same in the greenhouse re removal of axilliary shoots, number of trusses and so on? Does one size fit all? Thanks Valerie

Very useful, I havent got a garden, just a concrete yard and no experience of growing vegetables. This seems a nice easy way to start and they can be grown in a pot. Thanks Bridget
