Overview
Summer-fruiting raspberries are ready to pick from July. From late-May, it's time to tie in new canes and put up nets to prevent the birds from eating the fruit before you get a chance to pick it.
Do it:
June - July
At its best:
harvest from July to August
Takes just:
30 minutes
How to do it
-
Cover raspberry canes with netting. This can be attached to a permanent fruit cage if you have one. Or drape the net over a temporary structure of bamboo canes, securing along the base of the net with bricks or stones to stop birds hopping under. -
Tie in new raspberry canes to horizontal training wires so that they don't get snapped off when you come to harvest the fruits over the coming weeks. -
Using secateurs, cut out the weakest new canes to leave four or five strong canes per plant to carry next year's crop. And cut out this year's fruiting canes as soon as you've picked the raspberries.
"Keep the canes well watered during dry weather in July-August to help the fruit swell."
