Mixing French Beans

Posted: 15/05/2016 at 15:58

Hi all,

Hope you are having a lovely weekend. I just want some advice, I have sown some climbing French Beans - Cobra - but not as many have germinated as I'd like.

So I want to buy some extra from the garden centre, but wondered if I could mix bean varieties or even peas in the same area?

All advice always welcome - Thanks!

Ground Cover Between Paving

Posted: 02/04/2016 at 15:11

Hi all,

Looking for some ideas please... I have a paved patio which has quite a few gaps between each paving flag. I want to encourage something to grow between the gaps to stop the weeds taking over and to make the area look more natural than bare paving.

I was thinking creeping thyme, but I don't know if the drainage would be good enough. Is there anything else anyone can recommend?

Thank you - Hope you are having a lovely Spring!

Clay soil recommendations

Hi all, I've just made some raised beds on top of existing soil - the original bed was level to the ground and very shallow soil. I'm going to add top soil, mulch and compost to help improve the clay soil already in; but I'm not expecting miracles. With that in mind, do you have a clay soil plant recommendations? Looking for things I can get established this year to serve long term, not just annuals. Thanks in advance!

Ideas for Sept wedding flowers

Posted: 30/03/2015 at 19:02

Hi all, my friend is getting married early Sept and has decided to grow her own table decorations, but we are looking for ideas please. She is using small terracotta pots on her tables, and wants to grow her own displays. Any recommedations for what would work best for early Sept to be in flower? Bright colours and any varieties at the moment... No idea where to start! Looking forward to your input GW forumers. Thanks.

Moving tomatoes outside

Posted: 30/05/2013 at 18:45

Hi,

I have sown Gardener's Delight tomato seeds indoors, and they have grown well; about 30cms each now with good leaf coverage.

I do not have a greenhouse, and would like to plant them outside in suitable growbags (this is my first year at tomatoes too.) Do you think if I start to harden them off, I can plant them outside soon?

I would keep them inside sooner, but they seem to be attracting small flies... Any advice about outdoor tomatoes is really welcome! Thanks!

Soft potato tubers

Posted: 04/04/2013 at 20:34

Hi all,

I am looking to plant my potato tubers this weekend (first earlies) but a few have gone slightly soft. Will they still be ok to plant; they have chitted quite well so far too,

Thanks.

Viola - Plant or Not to Plant?

Thanks so much all! I can see this forum is going to become my life line - so sorry in advance for all the questions that will follow. I assume they have been inside a garden centre, so I'll try harding them off for a few days - maybe plant further into the week.

Viola - Plant or Not to Plant?

Posted: 30/03/2013 at 12:56

Hi all,

I've only been gardening for a short while, and every time I think I've got my head round something, another query crops up. I've been bought a tray of yellow violas that are already flowering; is it too soon to plant out, or are they hardy enough to go now?

Thanks in advance!
