Tree for shade

Posted: 16/02/2017 at 13:10

My neighbours are building a conservatory which means that on their side of the six foot dividing fence there is now an eight foot brick wall which looks ugly and will now cast considerable shade. Can anyone recommend a shade loving, fast growing tree to hide this monstrosity?

It's a paved area of my garden, with the downstairs bedroom windows looking directly into my garden. Reasonably sheltered with sun in the afternoon. I'm looking to give privacy for us both but without blocking out the light for them. Definitely no ivy though, that had become rampant before re I had the garden cleared!

Does bamboo work in containers?

I'm currently recreating my garden, having had it completely cleared last year. I'd like to have some shrubs in containers, preferably evergreen, to put in front of the bedroom windows of my downstairs neighbours, to give us both privacy, while not blocking out their light. Any ideas?

Cutting back Choisya

Posted: 06/02/2016 at 14:31

Last summer, when clearing my garden of unwanted trees, shrubs and overgrown ivy, I had to cut my two Choisyas back to about a foot from their bases, to get to the ivy that had become entwined in the shrubs. My garden was out of bounds all summer while building work was being carried out, and it's only now I've seen the two Choisyas are still just bare stumps with no signs of new leafage. Is there any hope for them? Luckily one of the cuttings I took has survived, but it'd be a shame for these to have died.

Can anyone tell me the name of a shrub that has clusters of small, blue, ball shaped flowers?

Since this morning my four salvia wils sage plants have been reduced to skeletons. Any idea what's eaten them, and how to treat/salvage the plants?
