Trees or bushes that grow to 6-10m mature height

Posted: 22/03/2016 at 18:47

I have an annoying privacy issue due to neighbours behind having large windows on the side of their house that look directly into my garden.

I've mixed laurel and photinia red robin in with flowering cherry trees and also a sorbus (whitebeam) which allows for evergreen privacy in parts of my garden but lovely flowers and leaves during the spring and summer. I have a prunus kanzan tree which I think is the beautiful pink one you posted above!

I'm not an experienced or skilled gardener as only been gardening a few years but think it works well and I'm slowly achieving a better and more interesting screen each year!

Buying a new shed...nightmare

Sorry to hear you had such a nightmare with Argos.

Would love to hear where you found the good shed as so many sheds seem to have really poor reviews!

Hope you get your refund....

Ask Joe Swift a garden design question

I have a typical housing estate garden - short and wide! I feel really uncomfortable using my garden in the summer as I have very little privacy from the windows of the house behind. How can I create a screen without losing half my garden to trees or a huge hedge?

Clematis dried leaves

Is it an Armandii evergreen clematis? I have 2 of these and both have dried brown leaves at the bottom. Shoots and green growth fine at the top. I think is normal for them. Just a bit unsightly at the lower end!!

Mine has it this year too - berries look blackened and awful. Shame as the flowers were lovely in spring and it's looked very healthy until now. I guess is the dry spring/summer as lots of my plants are suffering with disease, yellowing leaves and poor growth so I know how you feel!

instant hedging container grown

Bamboo? I have one which is about 9ft growing in a big container for privacy. A row of them would be good - I just can't afford it!!

It's the wind that's been the worst thing for my garden. I'm in the SW and had very little growth and quite a bit of damage to deal with this year

Really hoping for decent late summer weather and actually some more rain...ground still dry and cracked here despite a few wet days during the last few weeks!

Love your garden

I like the fact that it is generally small(er) gardens with specific issues to solve e.g. slopes or privacy. I've enjoyed the series - any gardening programmes are good IMHO and I usually end up shedding a tear or two at the back stories! But then I did like Ground Force back in the day

Problem with bamboo leaves going brown

I like the idea of putting it into a half barrel - and wheels are a great idea too as I would also like to move it around! The pot it's currently in is deeper than it is wide so that's maybe another reason it's not so happy.  I'm just hoping it survives the forecasted winds tomorrow without causing even more damage

Thank you  that's all very helpful advice!

I'll cut down on the feeding in that case! It has just been in this pot for a year but has produced at least 10 new canes this spring/summer so could well be pot bound and need dividing or replenishing.

The garden is very windy and the pot has blown over a few times this year so some of the damage might be wind burn too I guess?
