Gardeners who love their feline friends

Posted: 01/04/2014 at 20:50

Love my tortie cat to bits too but appreciate she's probably a bit of a pain for my neighbours who love having birds visiting their gardens. She's always around when I'm gardening - seems to have a sixth sense when I'll be out as she always comes back from hunting to keep me company!

Loving the cat pics and sorry to hear of those cats who were loved and lost.

That's great - thank you for those suggestions. Off to the garden centre today so gives me plenty to look at

Suitable plant ideas please..

Have just widened my flower beds and would like to put in some ground cover - something that will survive underneath various deciduous trees along an east facing border. Soil is very heavy clay and alkaline. Has been improved a bit after a few years of mulching and adding lots of additional compost and manure. Any suggestions gratefully received

Photinia leaf drop

Very useful advice thank you!

My photinia currently has lovely red new growth but the older leaves are pale and mottled which as you suggest, Flowerchild probably means it's not happy in my soil. I'm thinking about replacing it with a laurel as they do very well in my garden - I may buy another photinia to grow in a large pot instead.

Hope your photinia recovers successfully Drywsdad

I've used them in the past - the lawn was beautiful after treatment. Sadly it's one of those 'extra' costs that has to go when money gets tight!

Photinia leaf drop

Glad you posted as was worried about my photinia bush which is dropping a lot of leaves too. I've also had the black spots on the leaves for the last year or so. Your tree looks really lovely at the front there - hope it recovers ok!

Can anyone tell me what kind of soil they prefer? I've got a very alkaline soil and have been mulching with ericacious compost to try to reduce the PH. This is an attempt to improve the leaf colour which is very pale. Am I just fighting a losing battle with this plant??

(Hope you don't mind me asking here OP - was about to post but saw you had already asked similar q!)

Yellow leaves - help!!

Posted: 16/07/2013 at 21:40

Thanks.. appreciate your replies! Yes am watering it and has been fed fortnightly. Am very relieved you think not fireblight though as as this was my main worry and I had thought the pyracantha next to it was showing signs last year. There is no sign of oozing or weeping on branches and no fungus that I can see.

Will try to get pic of whole tree tomorrow but is mainly the lower middle section - new growth is currently fine.

Yellow leaves - help!!

I have a Sorbus aria which is around 3 yrs old and the leaves in the centre of the tree are all going yellow/brown and falling off - see pic. The tree is in quite a shady area although it does get Sun most of the day. I also have yellowing leaves on some of my other plants nearby - a solanum and honeysuckle.

Do you think this is a soil problem - is very alkaline when I tested it? If not, any ideas what could be the cause?
