Holes in the leaves of my cherry blossom tree

Posted: 10/06/2012 at 21:05

Oh no - I've noticed holes in the leaves of my young cherry tree too.  Been out to have a look at the trunk but can't see any oozing or dead patches.  Could there be any other reasons for holes in the leaves?

Clematis Montana

I too planted several Montana (and a Russian Vine oops) when I took over our small garden knowing nothing about the beasts that they become!!  Oh well, you live and learn and at least you get fast screening (if like me you need it!).

I did hack a Montana down last year, again not knowing about Clematis groups etc and I was brutal.  After a slightly slow start this year it is nearly 6 foot again and romping away

Laurel...

Excellent - thanks Wintersong that is really helpful.  A large lollypop shape would be perfect for my border and screening.  Hadn't thought about doing that with my laurels before

Interesting thread - my recently planted laurels have gone mad too which I am delighted about as they will hopefully provide me with a bit of privacy in the next few years if they keep growing at this rate!

Wintersong - can I ask how did you train as standards?  Do you continue to remove the branches lower down or wait until it has reached a certain size?  Mine are currently about 7 feet tall and bushing out madly but as I have a small garden am more interested in them gaining in height than in width.  Sorry for hijack btw OP I maybe should have started new thread!

Robinia Tree problems...

Not sure if it was planted correctly but the soil could be a problem.  Although it is poor, it is very heavy and cracks when it dries out.  It is also very alkaline.  Any tips for what I should do if that is the problem?  I will stop mulching it and watering it regularly.

Oh no - I had read about that but assumed as it was in leaf it could be something else causing the leaf problem.  I will be so sad to lose it

I hope you can see from this pic.  It is about 3 yrs old now and definitely didn't look like this last year.  It is planted in quite poor soil but has been enriched and fed/mulched regularly.  I believe they tolerate poor soils but not sure if this is the problem.  Hasn't been damaged afaik and not been pruned yet as is a young tree.

Robinia Tree problems...

I have a Robinia Frisia tree which is usually very beautiful by now but the leaves have emerged and they are tiny, miniature versions of how they should be!  Have the leaf buds been damaged by frost?  Anyone have similar problem or know what the reason could be? TIA

Protecting plants from frost

We're in Gloucestershire - I think my garden/area is a bit of a frost pocket as my flowers/trees all come out later than in other areas.  The garden is also west facing so no sun on it until later in the afternoon!

Great thanks - they all seemed to survive ok last night but put fleece over the Dahlias and everything in our greenhouse as it's not heated.  Just wish it would warm up a bit
