Remove Robinia Tree?

Posted: 19/10/2012 at 20:01

Thank you for the replies - all much appreciated.  I will try the sulphur and hope for the best next year.  It's the dense foliage I love about this tree - it is perfect for screening and looks so beautiful throughout spring- autumn.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestion - that might work quite well as a replacement as long as it gives good coverage ..

Remove Robinia Tree?

Posted: 18/10/2012 at 20:01

Hi, I've posted before about my Robinia tree which appears to have succombed to the disease that has destroyed a great many of these trees recently

Although after a slow start, it has actually been very beautiful and made a lot of growth during the year almost doubling in size (it is still a young tree).  However, brown patches appeared on the leaves similar to the beginning of this disease and they have mostly now fallen off.

I am wondering whether to remove the tree now or whether to give it another year to see what happens and potentially have to pay a tree surgeon to take it out if it gets much bigger?

I love this tree but I need it for a privacy issue so would want to get started with another tree asap so it doesn't leave a gap for too long!

Many thanks for any advice

Small Trees For Privacy

Have you considered a raised hedge?  Expensive but you wouldn't lose any space underneath and would provide a fairly instant screen.

I have a similar problem with overlooking upstairs windows and have planted a Sorbus as they do have that rounded, dense shape.  It's a lovely tree but rather slow growing compared to the Prunus I have also put in.  You could also shape a Cherry laurel into a standard (as someone on here told me!)  which I am in the process of doing to create some evergreen privacy along with my deciduous trees.

Position and pruning of Sorbus aria 'Lutescens'

I pruned mine in Nov/Dec last year and it seemed fine.  My tree hasn't produced any flowers or berries this year but is only 3 yrs old so that could be why.  Hopefully someone with a more mature tree will come along with some advice.  They are such lovely trees but I'll admit mine has looked a bit sorry for itself the latter end of the season with leaves coming off early - maybe didn't like the weather!

Yep - totally agree you can actually see it growing.  I planted one a few years ago to provide us with some privacy and it has taken over a 30 ft long fence already and most of the neighbours shrubs on the other side so it's coming out!!

This is happening to quite a few of my plants this year too.  Have just fed them a dose of Epsom Salts - totally agree with flowering rose about too much rain!

Cherry Laurel?

Sweetpeas

I have to admit, my sweet peas have done really well with loads of flowers but they are starting to look quite manky and mildewed now. The greenfly have been in abundance though - my house is now full of them as they were hiding in the flowers I have been cutting!

Wow - you give me a huge amount of hope!!  I have a similar sized garden also on an estate and started it from scratch last year.  Your garden is amazing and I sincerely hope mine looks that good in a few years time
