figs bag or pit

Posted: 07/03/2014 at 10:57

Hi all ,i thought id pass this info on to anyone interested in figs,i wanted to know how the root bags compare to the fig pit,so i asked the main man  Stephen at Reads Nursery's, here is his answer These are good for several years, a lot depends on the soil type also. The main aim of the bag is to prevent excessive growth to get the tree fruiting, after that it is not so essential. In a few years ... 5-6 ? the fig will often break through , if it is essential to keep the tree small - use paving slabs to restict it. Hope this is useful. Alan

when we left Nottingham a few years ago i commented on missing the wild deer that are well liked in the Midlands, a few more years on,, and on the actual day we arrived in Mundesley Norfolk we noticed a sign on the Cromer road ref deer and as we passed it a small strange looking deer came out from behind it as if it owned the road and just stare at us, our first intro to the Muntjac, wot a cracking looking animal, especially on somebody else's garden

Hi Dove iv just messaged Reads to see how the root bags perform once in the ground,as i dont want the roots to escape in a few years and lose some of the fruit, if they work then its a heck of a lot easier and cheaper than the slabs, hears hoping, and i wonder if anyone has used this method for any length of time on here.

Alison, when i do plant figs in the ground the pit needs to be about 2 feet x 2 feet restricted by slabs etc open rubble bottom for good drainage for a fig to settle and fruit, big pots are good also perhaps a bigger (one size up is normal) or if fig is well established a 24 inch and heavier pot, or tie the tree to wall or stake depending where its going, my last years cuttings are being potted on to 12 inch pots for the first year then bigger ones or pits, next year ,re-positioned figs can sometimes suffer from shock loss of leaves etc but do recover.  good luck.
