Hi M and B I never ever buy food nettle and comfry tea is as good as seaweed, first smelly way get an old pillow case protector (pound shop pound for 2) fill with cut nettles or comfry or mixed ,place in bucket of some kind weight it down and fill with water and cover with refuse bag,3/4 weeks dilute 10 /15 to one or like weak tea, this is to use direct onto soil ,for pest spray dilute 20/25 to 1 or it will burn the leaves, if it does burn dilute more ,,and it stinks, way no 2 almost no smell, place cut nettles/comfry into a container with drain holes in bottom fill with nettles /comfry add i pint of water to start it and weight it down well place this container into another to catch the juice/tea keep out of the rain ,the dark juice is pure food and needs diluting 20 to one or try a little. another way place a brick into the pillow bag tie a string onto it to retrieve it when its done and drop into your water but replace cover, use straight from butt, mine are all 40 gallons
its wonderful and smells delightful spuds love it and strawbs go big and juicy so does all the other plants and veg, give it a go ITS FREE

The age old problem of cats !

Posted: 24/05/2013 at 19:37
Hi Betty, its all been said before, but we are cat free for months now due to Jeyes ready to use spray or diluted from the tin,Wilco,s cheapest so far ,don't spray on plants but near to them is ok, if you dig or disturb the soil in any way spray again ,it takes about a week to cure the cats and it lasts when used ongoing for weeks or months at a spray, iv had one visit in 5/6 months because i planted and forgot to spray around the new plant,IT WORKS i now spray once a month lightly,Try it.and good luck.

bums not allowed

Posted: 22/05/2013 at 10:42
last week i had a walk around the allotments here in Tenby and noted the rate of growth on 2 or 3 items ,i noted who top manured last year as i did and who didn't,as dropping trousers and placing ones bum close to the soil to test for temperature is definatly not allowed i plunged my hand about 12/15 inches into the soils,a real difference in soil temperature was more than obvious much warmer for the top manured ones, the reason was pointed out to me by a real old very good allotmeteer that the manure was a bit on the new side when we got it and was still rotting down creating warmth ,better to have well rotted manure he said but the warmth this has produced has in actual fact give us a good start ,spuds and such are racing away well chuffed we are. Good luck all Alan4711

Compost heaps and rats

Posted: 21/05/2013 at 10:40

Hi Grandma, last year our covered compost heap revealed a large rats nets with some of the  the contents of my compost darlek stored  nicely in the nest,i found they had dug under the darlek and i eventually placed it on breeze blocks and when i used the heap they vacated not to return ,there's plenty of other sources of food on the other allotments so preventing them getting to the kitchen waste they gave notice ,paid up and left and good riddance, hope this helps

Runner Beans.

like Verdun my bean frame is permanent the same idea, 7 foot wooden poles from the farm suppliers at ?? 1.50 with chicken wire across and also the pea frame ,2 x 4 foot poles from the farmers supply shop at ?? 1 each and chicken wire across , and they never get rotated like the rest of the crops on the allotment, they never fall down never get moved and so cheap and easy some of us use bean mesh or old fishing boat nets when we can get them, these are good for fruit cages as well ,2nd hand very cheap
good luck
