Hi Pump ,this year we grew potatoes in 5 of our large raised beds, all well manured and weed free, raised beds are just so easy to use no matter what you want to grow ,once built and ready they are just so easy to maintain, but you have to watch the moisture levels as raised beds drain and dry quicker, earlies would be just right for a start and Charlottes were the allotments top spud this year ,our Winston were rubbish Kestrel ok, Cara main ok, good luck,, Alan4711

LIL you are dead right , get the plot clean and tidy ,will you need a shed ,plan what grows best in that area, raised beds or not, what soil have you got, what veg can you grow that costs most to buy in the shops, go to the charity shops they're full of good gardening books very cheap, and dont rush to plant too soon ,and enjoy ,have you got a kettle!!! most important we think and plan best sitting and looking at the allotments we have get the feel of it, And get on with your neighboring allotmenteers your going to need them sooner or later i promise you ASK and ASK its all free, we started with winter approaching and planned for the coming season that worked well ,, good luck Alan

Hi some reasons why flowers dont set, soil not kept moist,,try to mulch the soil in early midsummer,,early morning/evening misting helps to keep the humidity around the flowers and help to set,,alkaline, chalky soils is best for beans,if you have neutral or acidic soil it pays to water the crop once with hydrated lime,,also to pinch out the growing tips of the plants when they are 6 to 8 inches high, resulting side shoots usually set better,, ( RHC allotment hand book ) just got it from charity shop ??16:99
got it as a pressy for ten bob (50 pence for the youngsters if there are any on ea)

with things like this so often things arise that the norm has never heard off, our purchase going through is also on an unadopted road and everyone sorts things out between themselves, however our solicitor has found out half the road is a bridle path and ""its illegal to drive over one "" however nobody knows who owns it and its been driven over for over 70 years so it seems were ok as we need to go over it to get to our property, the cleaning and repair of the road is all shared and so forth, and luckily they are all obviously looking at there properties they are all keen Gardeners so are bound to be nice easy going neighbors (PLEASE)

Hi all , i would appreciate any info for choosing plants (perennial ) for an evening spot that the old owners on returning from Cyprus made themselves its an evening sit in"" bottle of wine area"" as they called it, table and seats and suchlike and very nice, it gets good light and sun from 10 am ish onwards and catches the last of the sun in the evening, a very pleasant well protected spot, so we would like to add some big mediterranean type pots with new nite time aromas if poss maybe climbers ,im not sure if there are plants that smell nice at nite time,, anyway im giving it a tryandc and luckily we have a really good G/C nearby i can order them from many thanks and good luck,, Alan

Joyce, the questions Daintiness is asking are absolutely the right ones ,we are buying a house with very similar problems, its not that difficult to sort out so don't go worrying yourself, try to find the answers and come back ,when you bought the property this would have been noted and looked at by your solicitor, if that was too long ago or you cant remember it not a problem follow Daintiness ,s advise and no worries.if your not ( like me ) a computer person start with Cit,advice

Posted: 23/08/2013 at 11:19
hi i had the same prob so i took cuttings as best i could, and they are all ok so the problem didn't carry on, at the same time as they grew i fed the cuttings half with Baby bio and half with 50/1 Nettle tea ( the dry way ) just to see which was the better for me, bio ok no probs at all, nettle tea plants have loved it and are strong and twice as big , the original plant came back after the cutting and is now ok,
