Hi Richard, if you go to the RHS the info is really easy to follow ,just one thing is after you have planted its a good idea to leave the first years crop to die back into the crown to give it a better start and rhubarb loves the cold it comes from Siberia originally, raised beds are great and if your near the coast surround the crowns with seaweed as slugs and snails love to dine out on them but dont like seaweed,if not them maybe pellets will do   Good luck Rich,,

Morning all iv been talking with Stevep5b and Bob the G and a few others who are helping,we both have an old Apple tree and trying to sort it out the best way poss, Im wondering if I dont go down the road of third pruning and decide to  cut and burn then plant a Bramley seedling , just how close to the original roots can i plant,Im not sure how long old roots take to rot , or would they be a hindrance for the new one,or do they stop taking in water quickly and die. I have no experience of doing this before so help if poss, The reason i want to plant close to the old one is obviously in that part of the garden im short of room, and i cant dig the roots out due to an op a short time ago so lazy im not , so thats the prob at the moment any help is good  Many thanks from dull Norfolk

Steve ,good morning ,iv been thinking about the prob,if a tree needs to be regenerated by a third at a time pruning to be safe,, then the time and work im thinking could be spent on cut the tree and give away or burn the wood, then invest around £20 ( mine was £21:50 ) form the nursery ) for a Bramley Seedling perhaps and start again afresh,  im not sure how close a new tree can be planted to the old roots but i,ll ask a new Q ,someone will know, Im not sure which way to go yet but my neighbor has an open fire so that's a start anyway so ok good luck all ....bit dull erein Norfolk
