Peony Pruning?

Posted: 26/06/2012 at 11:30

I've never tried growing the seeds but I see no reason why you shouldn't. The only thing to be aware of is if you have hybrids they will not come true.

Cutting back - no, don't. Let them take in energy from the leaves, and cut them back when the leaves are brown and dead.

Or, better still, use a food-safe insecticide - there are plenty of them about.

If you snap a stem, just prune it back to just above a pair of leaves and it will shoot again.

Are Hostas really for shade?

Posted: 25/06/2012 at 21:58

Hostas' principal interest is their leaves rather than their flowers. In the vast majority of cases, leaf colour is better in shade.

Going back to flowers, many flower quite late in summer, and will probably be even later this year because of the poor weather.

No, as long as the stems are flexible you can pull them horizontal. I wouldn't rush to give up on your rose, though - if it's been in the ground for only a few months, I would expect it to be making roots and leaf at the expense of flowering. Train it in this year, and you should see flowers next year.

To get flowers on climbing roses you need to train the stems horizontally - otherwise, they put their energy into vertical growth and you will only get a few flowers at the top of the stem. So, if you're training it up an arch, I wouldn't expect many flowers until it's reached the top and been pulled sideways.

Peppers & Margarites - the same malady?

No, it doesn't sound like it - I was thinking of horse manure contaminated with aminopyralid, which has been killing people's vegetables for a few years now.
