Diggingdoris, lovely photos. Above is photo of the bug box our daughter made for the garden.  For some reason photo won't rotate. Having difficulty downloading any pictures to this site today!

Depends what you want to do really.  You can pinch the tip out and allow more side shoots for a bushier plant and tie them in.  Or you can grow as corden by taking side shoots out and tie in the main stem for longer stem flowers.

Come to think of it, they could be.  Never really though about it until you suggested!  I had a patch of radish nearby, which bolted and then pretty much stayed there until I cleared the raised bed in January.  The stems are pretty woody.

Better get them out, I don't want to damage the other plants around them, there a lovely purple cerinthe growing under that lot.

Anyone done any gardening today?

Just got back from the allotment this morning.  Bit chilly, but a bit of hoeing and weeding soon warms me up.  Quick hoe around the onions and garlic, and then weeded around the raspberry canes.  Took a couple of pictures for reference.

Sowed some beetroot, and some spring onions (for some reason they never do well at allotment).  Checked my carrots which are coming up nicely, Sugar Snax and Nantes varieties.  First beetroot are coming on well and the radish too.

I have a small wildflower patch on my allotment. Not sure what the attached flower is, these have all seeded from last year. Any ideas?

Bloomin' pigeons!!!!

Bloomin pigeons have been at my leek seedlings.  I have them in a cool frame and since the weather so nice, I kept the lid open all day.  Just went to water and loads of them have been pulled out the compost and chucked about.  Think most are salvageable, grrrrr

Yes you can, they'll be okay. Plant some seeds now so you have a few to put in the ground later in the year too.

Birds.

We dont see a huge array of birds in our garden, mainly robin, blackbird, starling, blue tits and collared dove. Not a fan of the wood pigeon who gorge on most of the feed. I was excited to see a blackbird building a nest in a shrub a few weeks ago, but after laying its eggs something must have attacked it and both eggs and blackbird gone.

Just been sat having morning cuppa and can see two blue tits have made a home in our nesting box too.

Many years ago when I first left home, I started off some seeds in a seed tray and put them in a sheltered place in the garden with cling film over.  That year I had the most magnificent pots and hanging baskets!

New Allotment

Well done Victoria, hope you enjoy your new allotment.  We have a double plot.  The first half we had was started from scratch and we had to clear grass and weeds away (it had been an allotment about 50 years ago, so there was buried bits and bobs) so that's what we took time doing.

Our neighbour just faffed about really and planted a bit and then left it, didn't really clear away the weeds properly, just dug them in etc.  Anyway they gave up and I took that plot on too, so again we just started at one end and dug the whole lot over again and removed everything.  Replanted any useful bulbs (which are coming up now where we want them too).

SO my only advice to you is as others have said, take your time, clear it well, give it a go and most importantly enjoy
