Slugs and snails

Posted: 20/07/2012 at 21:41

I just wrote this on the other slug post.  Beer traps are amazing and fairly mess free.  Get Tesco's Value beer - 4 tins for £.  Replace the beer every two days and empty the resultant catch in the compost bin.  Job done!  20 or 30 slugs per night in each trap.

I've known about beer traps for ages but I usually went for the bucket of hot soapy water and going out with a torch at night.  Next day I'd empty all the dead slugs down the drain in the road.  (Clearly this doesn't work for snails though - they'd block the drain).  However, messy job.  Now I've actually got the beer trap going and am amazed at how efficient it is.  Every night 20 or 30 dead slugs in the beer - no effort.  I leave it for two days and put the small amount of beer and resultant slugs in the compost bin.  That seems to be working OK.  The beer is just Tesco's Value beer - 4 tins for around £1.

Hi, Can anybody advise on a beetle I've just noticed on my lavender? It's the same shape as a ladybird bit it's bronze. On each wing case it has three or four pale orange stripes from head to tail which you have to get up close to see. Squish it or foster it?

Mystery Plant - Help Needed

We had it on our allotments years ago and never completely mastered it.  The roots go down an incredibly long way and is one of the oldest plants on earth.  However, most things can't survive efficiently if you don't allow them above soil.  Its just hoe, hoe and more hoe.
