Thanks for the information.  We have thought of installing a waterfall and another small pond but I can imagine problems occurring with the pump etc. so I am not too keen.  We did make a brick tower and put a marginal plant on top unfortunately something large (not sure what) got into the pond one night and dislodged the plant and the top bricks.  The plant never really recovered.

The posts idea could work but I am a bit worried about the liner especially as we have criters getting in our pond at night.

Thanks again for all your help.

Unfortunately we cant plant on the edges of the pond as it goes straight down.  We have tied some wood against the side so as to allow frogs etc to escape and also we have a lot of lily pads.

We had (we think) a mink in our pond which killed all our fish (headless bodies on the patio) not very nice.  We have found that we also have a giant diving beetle the offspring of which hasbeen killing all our tadpoles, newts and possibly baby fish that survived the massacre.  Is there any hope!

Thanks for the information.  We have still got our thinking caps on!

We have a raised pond one side is on the patio then steps down to a small patio the garden side is a rockery.  As the pond is square and has an overhanging stone top it is difficult for the frogs, toads and newts to get in and out.  We would like to extend the pond from the square maybe to an oval with a smaller rockery and maybe some seating cant quite picture how to do it.
