What to grow with bluebells?

Posted: 29/09/2014 at 12:17

I have thousands of bluebells. Digging them up does not work- there seems to be more the following year! They also smother every other plant for a while too. I have found that borage works well but spreads so quickly. I am also planting out lots of foxgloves each year. I also love the idea of Ammi and other white umbelliferas.

Bluebell bulbs are really deep. Why not trying another summer bulb as a succession such as Alliums or Lilly? They won't need much looking after and am sure they would be fine with bluebells.

Here is a link to a blog I look at occasionally for advice on flowers and seed collection. There are some good photos of the seeds:

Talkback: Growing aquilegias

So..... how do you grow them?
Is it best to collect the seed and sow straight away or early next year?
Or wait for them to self seed and spread... or divide?
Disappointed that the title 'Growing Aquilegias' did not tell me how to grow them!

Hi Kate,

Thank you for your reply. This is just the sort of info I need. I want to keep it as natural as possible but just need something to replace the bluebells when they die down.

Bluebells, Bluebells!!!

I live near the coast with a garden that has a large section of Sycamore trees. Underneath this I have thousands and thousands of bluebells. When these finish the nettle and borage takes over- a great haven for insect life. I love the bluebells and don't want to tame the area too much but want to establish some all year round ground cover. Does anyone have suggestions for plants that can live happily with the huge bluebell population which is dominant at this time of year?
